Certain forms of carbon capture technology concentrate on sources of emissions and how to remove carbon from manufacturing plants and power plants before it escapes by looping, membrane gas separation, adsorption, or absorption. Other carbon capture technologies concentrate on airborne carbon filtration.
Following capture, the carbon may either be converted into something beneficial or stored somewhere, and it will never be able to pollute again.
Putting more emphasis on the latter, carbon dioxide that has been trapped can be utilized to grow plants, make polymers, and even carbonated drinks.
Most carbon capture methods, however, concentrate on sequestration—putting the carbon somewhere it can't exacerbate the climate problem—because there is less demand than supply for collected carbon dioxide. To prevent it from entering the atmosphere for a very long time—possibly thousands of years—one of the most popular methods is to pump the substance deeply into the soil, into underground reservoirs. This is, after all, the initial source of the majority of carbon gasses and carbon products, such as oil and natural gas.
